01/26/2003 Archived Entry: "musical ranting"

I read an Anti-Avril article today. I thought I might rant a little bit.

I don't know a whole lot about the recent pop scene, mostly out of avoidance. Everything has felt the same though. But I think it's a similar thing as people who keep watching Bond movies. Not that Bond isn't fun and all, but c'mon it's exactly the same. Bad guys get killed, Bond gets the girl, insert explosions here. People feel comfortable knowing it's the same. It's a comfort to feel like they know something. It doesn't jar them or shake them and it makes people feel safe. I don't think that's such a horrible thing.

I guess Avril is nice in her own way. I don't really know enough to really say anything. But she is pop. That's at least one thing I know. From the very little I've heard she's not rock, she's pop. But that isn't such a bad thing when it makes people feel comfortable. She could possibly be a stepping stone to something a little bit more true to the punk genre. Let people get comfortable with the idea. Let tides shift.

One thing that annoys me about the Anti-Avril movement though is they start spouting things like talentless, produced, fake, etc. Well I guess I have enough faith in people that they'll feel that about her if it's true. And if it is she'll just eventually fade into the background. If it's not then it's possible she'll stay around longer than that. I guess it's the sort of thing that Dave Matthews Band didn't make however many albums they have and are still alive and kicking in the industry without any talent. Madonna wouldn't be around if she wasn't creative. The mainstream music industry is a difficult place to be in long term. If she manages to stay around good for her. She has skill and enough tact and creativity to not die musically. But if she is the talentless bimbo that the anti's are spouting then she'll fade. So there's no reason to get all huffy. =/

Ok. rant done. ^_^
